What season is it anyway?

Hello! Welcome to this edition of Misfit Multipreneur.

I'm Amanda and I'm here to share how I'm building intentional businesses to create a better future.

On Thursday I walked out of the house in linen trousers and a top, only to be freezing cold in both the office air conditioning and the howling gale outside.

On Friday I was pleased with myself for remembering a jumper, only to start sweating and have to stop halfway through my only 10 minute walk to the office to take it off.

Is summer over or isn't it? (Apparently it will be next week) And what even is summer anymore?

This is UK-specific but I'm assuming if you're elsewhere there are similarly confusing weather patterns, if not directly the same ones.

Currently digesting

Sophie Deen's idea

...of an internet 'driving test' for teenagers - similar to a driving test, there would be a provisional and then full license.

Given the speed of tech development, I also wonder whether a frequent re-test every few decades to keep it up-to-date would also help adults!

But like anything global, I wonder how this would work in practice with regulation, enforcement, etc.

Harry Dry's copywriting tips

I work with a lot of ideas and intangibles, so I'm wondering how I can make things more visual - I'm thinking sketchnotes, metaphors....

Alastair Campbell's book 'But What Can I Do?'

...is one of my first recent explorations into politics, civil society and thinking about how I can actually make a difference.

I'm thinking about how to impact and effect change in ways that go beyond individual service-provider businesses (coaching, yoga teaching) or building a globally important tech company.

Those are the main avenues I've worked on and thought about for the past decade of my career, but I suspect a more cross-disciplinary approach is needed to tackle the wicked problems of today.

The book was an easy read, great rallying cry to get involved and has some practical tips about how to do so.

Multipreneur-ing

  • I'm having some great conversations with People leaders about their understanding of financials and commercials in business. I'm interested to see what I can build to help.
  • Launching this newsletter was great, but also a bit self-pressuring to commit to writing frequently. I am feeling the positives of that pressure, which (I think!) is a good thing.
  • I'm very grateful to the amazing people from the Generalist World community who gave feedback on my writing, structure and newsletter overall last week.

I'm trying to incorporate more links, prioritise the reader (there I was thinking this was all about me) and add images, headers and other things to break up the text.

One of my dad's (many) hobbies is beekeeping and I drew this at my parents' house.

If there's anything you think could be changed or you want to see more/less of, please let me know!

Recent writing

My most recent blog post is: Back to the beginning. It explains the purpose of this newsletter in more detail and how I'm thinking about its future development.

Asks for help/looking for

London event venue

I'm looking for an event venue in London for the Future Angels event I'm running with South East Angels on 26th September at 6pm.

If you know anyone who has a potential space we could use, please let me know!

Resources on community-building

I'm starting to work on a few projects where I need to go into more depth on building community, hosting events and creating amazing spaces for people to connect.

I took Priya Parker's book The Art of Gathering out of the library this week and am excited to dive in.

Do you know anyone amazing at this I should connect with?

Any resources I should look at?

I will share recommendations in my next newsletter links in case anyone is working on similar things.

Thanks in advance!

Improving my IPO

(Inputs > Process > Outputs)

Walking with Spotify's Trap Workout playlist - helps with mental processing.

The beats are just the right tempo for a brisk walk and instrumental enough to provide focus but not too intense.

Becoming a better human.

I started meditating again this week and it felt amazing. Although there was A LOT of thought baggage to get through!

I think that will continue for the next few times I do it. But I'm still motivated to try.

There was a time when I meditated every day for at least 25 minutes, so I'd love to get back to that. We'll see...

I start every morning with some yoga or movement to warm up my (usually stiff) body.

This week I tried Leo moves' basic moves which was fun and interesting to get a bit of strength and coordination at the beginning of the day.
